Lesson 0207: Galactic History--The Jekk'Jekk Tarr
I always thought the Jekk'Jekk Tarr was one of the coolest ideas from the first two KOTOR games. If there were an equivalent in this current timeline, it could be an invaluable resource for aliens attempting to hide out from Imperials. This week was an attempt to connect the previous week's lecture with a less-traveled RP location and to just barely tie in to the Rakghoul infection that pops up from time to time. Like some of our admittedly-boring RPs, it did wind up being just a bunch of people sitting around and talking, but we kept it short and sweet. I'm not sure if they have the equivalent of infrared camera photos in Star Wars or not, but as always, I reserve the right to take creative license from time to time.
In continuing our conversation about utilizing improvised safehouses, for this particular lecture I chose to dredge up some more Galactic History. Yes, everyone's favorite type of lesson. In order to both liven the lesson up and relate it to current events, I decided to relocate the class to an Imperial outpost cantina on Quesh. What lesson could possibly relate to inhaling toxic fumes, you ask? Well I'm glad you (probably) asked.
As most of you know I've spent a great deal of my time based on the Smuggler's Moon, employed as a bartender. One evening as I was researching local history in search of a 'classic' cocktail, I came across a dated holostill of a Devaronian standing behind a bar with two Trandoshans casually leaning against it. I later showed it to my Vice Headmaster, asking, "What do you suppose they were talking about?" After a confused stare and lengthy conversation with my human friend about whether or not I was messing with him, we eventually discovered that the image displayed the infrared spectrum, which his eyes could not naturally observe. Curiousity led to extensive and obsessive digging, which lead me to the story of the Jekk'Jekk Tarr.
The Jekk'Jekk Tarr was a most obscure cantina actually built from a former ventilation system at the spaceport docks of Nar Shaddaa during the waning years of the Old Sith Wars. The establishment was, in a word, fascinating. Divided into at least five separate sections, each meant to simulate the atmospheres of various planets, all deadly to oxygen-breathing species, such as humans. There was an arid room designed to simulate planets like Ryloth and Sriluur, a room containing ammonia-based gases hospitable to the Gand--it was the perfect hide-out for any sentient species who wished to lay low from the more populous humans or even a nosy Nikto. Such a hideaway would've been invaluable in today's age, when many non-humans are subject to persecution from Imperial hardliners. Unfortunately the business of the Jekk'Jekk Tarr was disrupted by some sort of gang fight, and the cantina was closed permanently shortly before the end of the Sith Civil War. Perhaps the most unfortunate part of my research was that the Jekk'Jekk Tarr was not a cantina in the traditional sense, instead serving nutrient chemicals. Therefore, my search for a traditional local drink turned up arguably fruitless.
I brought the class to Quesh to demonstrate the advantage of atmosphere when it comes to choosing meeting locations. As most are wary of the inoculation procedure, Quesh is a planet far less frequently traveled than some of the others affected by the recent conflict. I also used the lesson as a reminder for everyone to remember to seek treatment with the Rakghoul vaccine, as it appears there's been another recent outbreak. Until next time, this is the Headmaster, logging off.
