Lesson 0209: Combat
Hooray! This week we taught a lesson we shamelessly stole from from another guild. Just kidding, we had the Seelund's approval before borrowing from their Roll System. We used a simplified, stripped-down version without any modifiers and only used it in single pairings. Their version is much more robust, and worth the read. You can do that here.
A few things about the above IC post are also true OOC. We did have a record number of attendees from the outset, thanks to a few friends. Our lessons are normally designed for about 10 people, so if it seem like it didn't scale well, our bad! We're working on it, and we hope to see you guys at future events we hold, be they 'lectures' or other activities.
There's also honestly no shortage of people who want to teach combat classes or be some sort of combat instructor. Since we're in an expansionary period and we are changing up some of what we do, I'll just remind a few of you reading what we're all about, and where we're going:
Instructor Evaluation
Conducted by: Hez
Instructor being observed: [REDACTED] (First-time Instructor)
Lesson: Combat
• Spoke with confidence from the outset
• Subject matter: Close Combat
o Combat courses are by far the most-requested classes in Academy history, despite the school's stated mission
o Combat Instructor is by far the most-requested position in Academy history, despite the school's stated mission
• Demonstrated thorough preparation
o [REDACTED] brought along a young woman called Kelsey to help her demonstrate sparring techniques
o Both Kelsey and [REDACTED] responded well to being asked to train with volunteers from the class
o Reflects well on instructor
• Class participation level moderate-high
o At 18, this lecture set an attendance record
o Most attendees remained respectful towards the instructor, even the gent who exited off the balcony
o Due to the sheer number of attendees, not all could be involved in the activity. Those who did, however, seemed to enjoy it, as well as some of the spectators.
• Involved volunteers in a class activity.
o Excellent teaching tactic
o The first two spars went off without incident. Both participants seemed respectful of each other afterward, in each case
o To call the last bout 'heated' would be an understatement. I would think 'No Lightning' would be implied by 'Friendly Spar'
o If [REDACTED] is to continue leading classes, she must demonstrate better control of the classroom
• Reminder to self: Review Academy's Liability Insurance Policy

- We're non-violent in almost every setting you'll see us in. If we're in uniform, we're not going to PvP duel you. We're seen as representing the C.I.A. which cannot be seen as a violent or non-neutral entity or we'll be shut down.
- We're neutral in almost every setting you'll see us in. We're not Imperials, we're not Republic. We're based on Nar Shadaa, and while we'll obey local laws based on whichever fake ID we're carrying, we reserve the right not to get arrested or bow down to you or whatever.
- If you do see us dueling someone, chances are they're a friend, or they're sitting in our voice server with us laughing, or it's been previously arranged, and we're probably not wearing a uniform anyway so we should be seen as 'off-duty'
- Hez is almost always in uniform. Branding! If not, it's either a disguise, or dress code, or some other RP reason.
- Warzones in RP are considered 'Combat Simulations'. We never really did this in the past, but expect to start seeing it in the future.
- Some people think PvP dueling should affect your character. Generally we don't, but rarely, occasionally we do. It's up to the player.
- We do engage in in-character violence, but it's usually behind closed doors and part of an established RP.
- Just because you see somebody with the guild tag doesn't mean they're IC a representative of the guild. Again, refer to whether or not they're in uniform. We have rules of engagement.
- I like turtles
- What we do as other characters in other guilds does not represent what our in-guild IC characters are, even if there's an established relationship between the two.
If you've got any more questions about the C.I.A., I'll be happy to answer them for you as they arrive. Then I'll probably switch to an alt and whisper you rumors completely contradicting what I just said and spreading terrible rumors. El oh el, exclamation point!
