Lesson 0106: Selective Information
Attended: Novaa, Rinoa, Thayta, Lii, Sky, Wammati
The class activity wound up being pretty fun for me, hopefully not obnoxious for everybody else. Basically I put everyone in the room on ignore and had everybody practice acting out random sentences using only emotes. Lolz were had.
We ran over on time, so I didn't get to discuss the OOC lesson in class. This is where I point out that the guild will not tolerate serious harassment of any kind, including but not limited to gender, race, religion, sexual preference or political affiliation. Civil discourse is acceptable, but you may be asked to keep it out of guild chat if it's bothering others. Joking around is fine, but if someone indicates that they're legitimately upset please be respectful.
I also wanted to talk about the /ignore feature, of which I am a huge proponent. There are lots of good reasons to put people on ignore. Whether they're upsetting you OOC, spamming say while you're trying to RP, or there's an RP reason for it, using /ignore can always be undone if you decide you'd like to see what that person has to say later. Unfortunately /ignore does not stop emotes, so you'll just have to mind your surroundings with the more seasoned trolls. Not everyone agrees with this perspective, and everyone's entitled to their own opinion. However, if Person "A" insists on keeping Person "B" on /ignore, please don't harass "A" about it, or you're just as guilty as "B". Harassment will be dealt with seriously. Screenshots always help.
Lastly, on a happy note...we finally have a Republic equivalent of our Guild! We'll likely still prioritize our Imperial version, but at least now there's a place for all our buddies on both sides of the fence. Look for Pubs with the <C I A> guild tag and give them a high five!
Good evening, class, and thanks for your attendance. Allow me to take roll so that those of you present can earn your grade for the day. I'd also like to welcome those of you who heard of us through Republic channels--we haven't always had the ability to freely communicate along them, but thanks to a few bribes and a little charm we've established a foothold. You can thank our First Cadet for that. Alright, Thayta, enough showboating. Everyone cut the chatter.
Hmm, quite the good segue indeed. Like it or not, sometimes in the world of Intelligence one of our primary means of information gathering is made suddenly unavailable to us. Communications can be jammed, information networks can be shut down, or droid vocabulators can suddenly malfunction. Other times people say much by not saying anything. The challenge lies in still being able to glean information in such a situation.
Not all of us are good at reading lips, or speak all languages. In order to fill in the missing pieces, we need to be able to read body language, pick up context clues in the way others are speaking to a person, or simply make a note to find out more information later.
That's correct, Rinoa. Sometimes even if we can hear everything happening in a room we still don't have the full story. When painting an accurate picture of your target, you may need to utilize two of a skilled Agent's best friends: time and patience. I know my snipers in the room would certainly agree.
Now, I've prepared an activity that will demonstrate to me just how effective some of you can be at communicating without all the means normally available to you...
