Lesson 0100: A word on etiquette
This was an impromptu lesson about RP etiquete. Most of this will be covered in more depth in the ‘Rules’ section, but there were a couple of things I touched on in particular.
1. First, there’s a big difference between roleplaying as a jerk and being a jerk. Know the difference, and don’t be a jerk. Golden Rule. Duh.
2. If you recognize someone is on an alt, don’t out them in Say or any other kind of Public chat channel, unless they’ve given you their permission or it’s common knowledge. They may not want everybody around them to know who they are, or may want people to have to work to find out their identity.
3. Try not to spam the Say channel when someone’s RPing. It makes it hard to keep up with everything going on when people are treating Say like it’s a chatroom. Instead, use whispers, or group or guild chat. This can get tricky when RPing with someone from the opposite faction, so just try to be respectful if someone else is trying to RP.
4. This is the first time I’ll mention godmodding, but it won’t be the last. Instead of doing actions like *cuts off your leg with a lightsaber* or “/e shoots you in the head point-blank”, give people a chance to respond how they like. A better way to say the above examples would be *swings his lightsaber down, aiming for your leg* or “/e puts her blaster to your temple, ready to pull the trigger”. This gives people a chance to improvise better and doesn’t put someone’s character in a position they didn’t already plan to be in.
Like I said, we’ll go over this more in ‘Rules’. Feel free to comment with other RP etiquette suggestions!
Thank you all for coming. Since we haven’t formally opened yet, I can’t officially call this a lesson. Instead we’ll call it more of an informal chat…Lesson 0, if you will.
You might wonder what an educational institution specializing in espionage and information gathering might have to do with good manners. It’s quite simple, actually. The key to most of what I have to teach my students lies in making connections with people. Sure, any slicer can find out the names and ranks of an infantry unit. But a well-trained Intelligence Agent can give you the Captain’s exact species and physical description, what the Lieutenant had to drink the night before, or even who the Sergeant’s REALLY in love with. How, you ask? I’ll explain that all in due time. For now, I’ll reiterate: connecting with people are the key.
It should be noted that ‘etiquette’ means ‘knowing how to behave in a given social situation’. While the majority of person simply like being spoken to kindly and given ample attention, the situation varies from person to person. Find out how your Subject likes to be treated, and conform to that.
Well, that’s about all for now. I don’t want to talk your ears off before I even open my doors, you know. I’ll see you all back at the cantina.
