Lesson 0101: An introduction to the Academy
Lessons to be learned from this fake lesson:
1. You can metagame all you want, but don't let that break the rules of RP. Metagaming in this case is using means your RP character would not have access to to gain knowledge of characters or situations they should know nothing about. In practice, many people Skype, use voice chat, or access guild websites to learn about characters in-game. While there's nothing explicitly wrong with that, it becomes a problem when you use that outside knowledge to influence the outcomes of RP.
2. Outside of strongholds, you're rarely going to find a place where you can RP in private. Even then, you never know who else has a key to someone else's stronghold, so be mindful of what you say. Even if you think nobody's listening to your chats, they might just be another RPer's alt, or friends with a notorious troll. Do your best to handle crowd control.
Welcome, my friends, to my newly re-purposed home. Most of you have been here at some point or another, be it when this was merely an arms warehouse or when an oafish Mandalorian was claiming it as his own. In any case, I’d like to present to you the new home of the Chorba Intelligence Academy. If you’ll follow me downstairs, you’ll see the main antechamber, where we will normally begin class.
I see we have a new student among us. That’s a little in-joke, dear—while most of us know each other outside these halls, technically, everyone here is a new student. If you don’t mind, ma’am, I’d like you to come up here to help me illustrate a point. Thank you. Now, class, I posit a question…who is this person?
No, you’re missing the point. I didn’t ask what her name is or what she does. I ask again, who is she?
Very good, Thayta. “I don’t know” is the only correct answer to this question. None of us have any idea who this person is. She could very well simply be who she claims she is. On the other hand, she could be an infiltrator, or possessed by someone infamous…perhaps the creature Hixar, or even the resurrected Emperor himself!
For better or for worse, we really have virtually no way of knowing or stopping a truly dedicated infiltrator. And yes, for whatever reason, we WILL have them. Fortunately for them, I welcome them with open arms into this institution. Personally I think we have much to learn from their kind, be they friend or foe. But it does raise an important point: be careful what you discuss in public, and be careful what you discuss in front of someone new. That’s all for now. Class dismissed.
